This Butterfly Pocket fluorite from the Okorusu Mine in Namibia has a particularly rich petrol-blue and teal colour, with intergrown cubic crystals that become almost black in their thicker sections. Around the edges, the fluorite changes to a much brighter turquoise and pale aqua, with translucent areas revealing darker internal colour zones. Several substantial cubes overlap across the principal viewing face, with broad geometric surfaces, stepped growth and smaller crystals developing between them.

What I particularly like about this specimen is the difference between the dark central crystals and the much clearer blue-green growth surrounding them. The colours become considerably brighter where light passes through the thinner edges, while the overlapping cubes give the piece an intricate three-dimensional appearance. Turn it over and there is a very different surface, with smaller fluorite crystals, darker purple areas and a substantial patch of orange-yellow mineralisation against pale associated material. There are visible surface marks, internal fractures and some incomplete crystal edges, but the strong blue-teal colour and contrasting turquoise translucency make this an attractive miniature from the Butterfly Pocket find.

Metaphysical Properties

Fluorite is traditionally associated with concentration, mental clarity and emotional balance. Blue fluorite is often linked with communication and calm thinking, while green fluorite is associated with renewal and personal growth. These are traditional metaphysical associations rather than scientifically established properties.
