A rare, natural black opal cabochon from Lightning Ridge, Australia — the most famous black opal source in the world. Although this is a modestly sized piece at around 6mm diameter, it shows clear green play-of-colour against a dark body tone, with flashes of yellow and subtle blue under stronger lighting.
The pattern is more painterly than sharply defined, but the colour coverage is broad across the face and noticeable even in indirect light. In hand, the opal displays an attractive mix of green and gold hues with a soft internal glow that becomes more apparent when angled into the light.
This opal is probably a little too small to be set into jewellery unless used as an accent stone. It’s better suited for collectors who appreciate natural Lightning Ridge opals and want an affordable example with visible play-of-colour.
A good opportunity to own a genuine Australian black opal from the world’s premier locality without the price tag usually associated with larger or brighter specimens.
