This 137.5 ct natural kyanite crystal comes from Sultan Hamud in Kenya and has one feature that made it impossible for me to overlook: it has naturally curved into an almost hook-like shape. Rather than the straight blade you would normally expect from kyanite, the whole end of the crystal sweeps around, with the natural lines running along the crystal following the curve.

The colour moves between blue-green and teal, with a much deeper blue running through the centre and some lovely translucent areas when held to the light. There are natural contacts, internal fractures and some pale matrix still attached around the curved end, but I think those actually suit this one. It is the strange natural shape, rather than perfection, that makes it such an interesting kyanite specimen.

Metaphysical Properties

Kyanite is often associated with communication, clarity and finding a sense of balance. Blue kyanite in particular is commonly linked with self-expression and encouraging calmer, clearer thinking.

These associations come from crystal traditions and are not scientifically proven.
