This is a natural North Carolina Hiddenite crystal, the rare green variety of spodumene and one of the most sought-after forms of the mineral. The colour is what immediately caught my attention with this piece: a fresh natural green running through a strongly striated crystal, with good lustre and enough transparency for the internal zoning to become visible as the light moves through it.

At around 19 mm long, this is a thumbnail-sized mineral specimen, but it has a surprising amount of character for its size. Fine longitudinal growth lines cover the crystal, with a natural termination present at one end and some minor edge wear and contact. Genuine North Carolina Hiddenite is considerably rarer than the abundant pale green spodumene commonly sold under the same name, which is what makes locality pieces like this especially interesting to me.
