This is a striking black-green epidote on quartz specimen from Hakkâri, Turkey. Two substantial milky-to-translucent quartz crystals dominate the foreground, while the ridge behind them carries lustrous, individually developed dark green to near-black epidote crystals with smaller quartz crystals growing amongst them.

What drew me to this particular specimen is the contrast. Much of the Hakkâri material seen on the collector market has finer, moss-like green epidote, whereas this piece has conspicuous dark prismatic to bladed crystals with highly reflective faces. Against the pale quartz they appear almost black from some angles, giving a surprisingly dramatic specimen for something measuring only 5.7 cm.

The epidote is still epidote rather than a separate “black epidote” mineral variety; the thicker, intensely coloured crystals simply appear near-black in reflected light. This darker, individually developed habit is less commonly encountered from Hakkâri than the locality’s familiar fine moss-green epidote material.

Metaphysical note: In crystal traditions, epidote is associated with growth and transformation, while quartz is associated with clarity and amplification. These are traditional beliefs rather than scientifically established properties.
